Robert Stroud Robert Stroud, better known as the birdman of alcatraz was born on January 28 1890 . In 1909, Stroud killed a man that failed to pay to a prostitute who Stroud was helping. In 1911 Stroud was found guilty of manslaughter and was sent to a federal penitentiary in Washington called MC Neil island. In prison he was reported to be very dangerous. There he assaulted a hospital orderly, and stabbed a fellow prisoner For this he received 6 months more at jail and was transferred to Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. There he refused a visit from his brother and even killed a guard. After this he was sentenced to death but had his mother pleading for his life. Thanks to this he was sentenced to life in segregation unit. Strout developed an interest for Canaries. After all the research he did on them, he wrote 2 books about their sicknesses. Later on, officials discovered that some of the equipment that Stroud had asked for, for his research, were used to make alcohol. In 1942 he was sent to Alcatraz where he spent 16 years in a segregation unit, and 11 years in the hospital prison. In 1959 he was transferred to the Medical Center for Federal P risoners.
